Artist Statement

The work I have produced over the last 2 years has evolved around the notion of narcissism and the duality of the self. The underlying role that narcissism plays in our culture captivates me. It is a leading force that determines an individuals satisfaction, both externally and internally. My images consign to the myth of Narcissus and demonstrate an understanding of the universal archetypal patterns that influence the individual; focusing on subjects such as envy, rage, exhibitionism, idealization, grandiosity, the need for mirroring, fear of the unconscious and the ego-self relationship. To be mirrored is to be understood, to feel that someone empathetically follows our thoughts, feelings and experiences. To mirror another person requires a willingness to enter into his/her world, to suspend critical judgment and reflect what is being offered.

The images I have created have been deeply influenced by the early 20th century movement of Surrealism, from its beginnings in the 1920s up to its present day. I believe the purpose of creating images is to ease the viewer into an alternative mentality, to provoke visual stimuli and enchant spectacle through color and shape.
